UPDATE: ON MAY 8TH, an email was sent to the Executive Director and the Chair of the Board of Directors of the San Romanoway Revitalization Association, an invitation for them to attend our upcoming rally and address the youth themselves and open up a dialogue… we received NO RESPONSE, and no one from SRRA came to speak with the youth… here’s the email that was sent:

“Dear Ms Stephnie Payne and Mr Kevin Green,

I am student/participant from the youth studio, writing to you on behalf of the youth of the Palisades Media Arts Program at Youth ‘N’ Charge Studio. We were very disappointed to see that the studio was shut down as of Wednesday last week. This is an important space for many youth such as myself. Creative expression is core to who I am and the studio provided me with a space where I could come to create and make music that means alot to me.

The youth have become aware that there have been some issues around funding regarding the youth studio and programs. We would like to request a meeting with the youth, yourselves, and the board of directors to gain some clarity around what has happened, why the studio is closed, and how we can move forward to support the re-opening and continuation of a much needed space for youth in the community.

A group of youth have come together to rally support on Friday this week for the cause of re-opening the studio. We have also started a petition that speak to some of our concerns around the studio closure and hopes for moving forward.

We would like to invite you to our gathering this Friday outside the PMAA Studio to hear our concerns, and help us come to a deeper understanding of the situation at hand. This space and the programming it provieded means alot to us and we want to see it grow and meet its potential.

We hope that you will join us this Friday May 9, and please help us extend the invitation to the rest of the board of directors.
Please reply all let us (the youth) know if you will be able to make it to the gathering, and also when we might be able to set up a time to meet with the board.

Thank you very much for your time,

Nathan Baya”
